"Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door." Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is estimated that 61 million Americans suffer mild to severe Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)

and 94% of these are yet to be diagnosed. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) represents the

majority of this market in which the breathing passage seals during sleep, resulting in fatigue and

has been directly linked to cardiac disease and diabetes.

Public awareness is poised to soar. Medical device sales in this therapeutic segment are

already on a steady 20% annual climb. Recent regulatory changes have made home

sleep testing affordable and accessible. Another important new Medicare regulation

requires improvements in patient data collection and monitoring.

This "Perfect Storm" has created an environment where a start-up with an innovative

device can capture a significant market share.

The most typically prescribed therapy is known as a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

device which provides constant airflow via a face mask to maintain uninterrupted breathing.

CPAPs are a $700 million US market at factory wholesale prices. This translates to over $2 billion

billed through health insurance, when dispensed by Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers.

DME's are responsible for bearing the cost of delivery, initial set-up, monitoring patient

compliance and reporting to Medicare. Current systems require patient interaction and are subject

to fraud and human error. Recent Medicare coverage pronouncements require proof of compliance

and patient benefit to assure reimbursement.
